I was enjoying a lovely alfresco lunch in Florence last September and as I tipped my head back to sip my wine I noticed this beautiful plaque of the artist Donatello on the side of a building. Look at the incredible detail and craftsmanship—the carved stone of the circular frame, the name in rolled parchment, the gold tiles, the bust (probably cast bronze?)—all amazing! That's the thing about Europe, it has all these hidden gems in the architecture—details, details, details! These pieces could and should be in a museum, but instead these artworks and dedications are on buildings or bridges. Wikipedia has an entry of the plaques of Florence here.
